An outstanding member of the CPC, a proven Communist loyal soldier, an outstanding alumnus of Beijing Institute of Technology, a famous radar expert in China, a pioneer and founder of the early warning aircraft industry, a winner of the highest national science and technology award, an academician of the CAE Member, a senior expert directly linked to the Central Committee, the former director of the 38th Research Institute of the Ministry of Electronics Industry, the former director of the Military Industry Bureau of China Electronics Industry Corporation, Comrade Wang Xiaomo, former executive vice president of the Electronic Science Research Institute of the Ministry of Information Industry, former deputy director of the Electronic Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and former deputy director of the Science and Technology Commission of China Electronics Technology Group Co., Ltd., died in Beijing at 14:06 on March 6, 2023, aged 84.


In the minds of all the teachers and students of Beijing Institute of Technology, the name of Wang Xiaomo can't be forgotten. Wang Xiaomo, born in Jinshan, Shanghai, in November 1938, was admitted to Beijing Institute of Technology in 1956. Since then, he has started his legendary radar life in this beautiful campus.

In 1956, Wang Xiaomo entered BIT to study radio. For Wang Xiaomo, who loved to play with the mineral radio since childhood, this choice seemed to be natural. After coming here, Wang Xiaomo was like a duck to water and plunged into the sea of radio and radar knowledge. During the university period, Wang Xiaomo got comprehensive development, "he learned more than scientific and technical knowledge".

"The first stop of life without parents' supervision is the university, which is very important. BIT has the tradition of Yan'an and educates us to devote ourselves to national defense technology. We have set up such ideal and pursuit instead of thinking about what big prize we will win in the future. BIT has a lot of activities and pays more attention to the cultivation of collective spirit. At that time, BIT’s radio department was a key major, and the classrooms were first-class. I did not do well in grade one or two, but I was much better in grade three. BIT's comprehensive development of moral, intellectual and physical education has given me good health and good mood, and laid a good foundation for my career in the next 50 years. " On April 2, 2013, Academician Wang Xiaomo recalled deeply when he returned to his alma mater to hold a report after winning the National Highest Science and Technology Award.

At the report meeting, Academician Wang Xiaomo was answering "The greatest impact of college life", and could not help recalling the scene when he entered the university. The admission notice issued by the university made him unforgettable all his life. It said: Welcome! The future Red National Defense Engineer. In just a few words, Academician Xiao Mo's lofty ideals and pursuits in his life have been fixed, and he will never give up or regret for his life. After leaving his parents, college is the first stop of independent life. Academician Xiao Mo recalled that the school has a rigorous style of study and requires self-study in the evening. The good learning atmosphere makes people feel very urgent. In addition to focusing on learning, there are many extracurricular community activities in the campus, which focus on the cultivation of collective spirit. "This not only educates our knowledge, but also gives us good health, so as to achieve all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique".

At the report meeting when he returned to his alma mater, Xiao Mo played Hu Qin and performed the aria of Peking Opera with the students of Beijing Institute of Technology, which won the endless applause of the whole audience.

Academician Wang Xiaomo not only studied hard, but also had a lively personality during his college years. He participated in many societies, such as Beijing Opera Troupe and motorcycle motorcade. Academician Xiao Mo often plays Hu Qin in the dormitory, and the other 15 people in the dormitory also receive the "influence of music". He sings Qingyi and likes Meipai. After he joined the Beijing Opera Troupe for a period, he became the backbone, and developed the Beijing Opera Troupe into an influential group in Beijing universities. The motorcycle team he participated in also won the first place in the Beijing University Competition.

If it was a coincidence that he came to the university to study radar in 1956, then in the later years, Wang Xiaomo was determined to devote all his life to the radar cause and achieve a brilliant life.

In 1961, Wang Xiaomo's graduation design with Yagi antenna as the main research content won the first prize of graduation design of Beijing Institute of Technology; In the same year, he was assigned to the 14th Research Institute of the 10th Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense in Nanjing. At that time, the Soviet experts had just withdrawn, leaving behind the design of the three-dimensional radar. The director of the office gave him a pile of data on the three-dimensional radar, which was almost all the data on the three-dimensional radar at that time in China. China's research and development of the three-dimensional radar was synchronized with the advanced countries in the world. Wang Xiaomo felt very lucky, "This is the opportunity for us to develop the cutting-edge technology".

Wang Xiaomo carefully studied the scheme of the Soviet experts, and felt that it was not satisfactory enough. He also extensively involved in the research of various countries. Finally, he put forward his own scheme and was approved by the state. This scheme is recognized as the most advanced in the world, and because of this project, he was promoted as the deputy chief designer. At this time, he has only worked for three years.

In 1969, in response to the call of the national "third line" construction, he joined the establishment of 38 China Electronics Technology Group Corporation in Guizhou in accordance with the deployment of 14 new radar research bases in the way of "separate relocation of integrated systems". At that time, the material conditions were extremely poor, and Wang Xiaomo even suffered from swelling. However, under such conditions, Wang Xiaomo still persevered and successfully developed the first automated three-coordinate radar there with the elites of the Chinese radar industry. The computer technology was used for the first time in China, and the radar technical indicators reached the international advanced level, China's air defense radar has achieved a major leap from a single warning function to a precise command and guidance function. In 1985, the project won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Award, and Wang Xiaomo ranked first.

In 1993, he was transferred to the executive vice president of the Electronic Science Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, and served as the deputy director of the Science and Technology Committee of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation. As a leader, he began to launch a general attack on the cause of domestic early warning aircraft.


Pioneer and founder of China's early warning aircraft industry

Possession of early warning aircraft is the expectation and dream of Chinese generations!

As early as the 1970s, China had started the development of early warning aircraft, but failed because of the limited national strength and weak technical foundation at that time. At that time, Wang Xiaomo was keenly aware that in order to defend national sovereignty under the conditions of information technology and realize the leap from territorial air defense to attack and defense, China must have an early warning aircraft! After decades of struggling in the front line of radar research, he has devoted himself to the development of early warning aircraft in China without hesitation.

In the 1980s, Wang Xiaomo planned and implemented the key technology of airborne early warning radar, and gradually broke through the most critical technology of airborne radar. In order to accelerate the development of early warning aircraft, China has carried out foreign cooperation on early warning aircraft. As the general technical director of the Chinese part of the project, he insisted that the Chinese side should take the lead in the research and development program and develop it simultaneously at home, laying a solid foundation for independent research and development. He creatively proposed for the first time a new type of early warning aircraft with a large disk knapsack three-sided active phased array, and raised the development requirements to a new commanding height.

After the Gulf War in 1990, China decided to solve the urgent need for early warning aircraft equipment through foreign cooperation. Wang Xiaomo served as the chief designer of the Chinese part and presided over the overall design of the system. For the first time in the world, he proposed the project plan of a new type of early warning aircraft based on a two-dimensional active phased array system with a three-sided array piggyback cover. At the same time, he led and organized the domestic R&D team to carry out research and development work simultaneously, mastered the design methods and main key technologies of early warning aircraft, trained and cultivated technical teams, and laid a solid foundation for China’s self-developed early warning aircraft.

Over the years, Wang Xiaomo has devoted himself to planning and promoting the development of China's early warning aircraft. In the mid-1990s, in response to China's national conditions, he took the lead in proposing to carry out pre-research on light-duty early warning aircraft, presided over the formulation of technical plans, and created conditions for China's decision-making to develop light-duty early warning aircraft. After the Air Police 2000 and Air Police 200 two types of early warning aircraft were approved, Wang Xiaomo proposed the idea of achieving exporting of early warning aircraft with domestic aircrafts, and served as the chief designer of the prototype, presided over the design and manufacture of the prototype, and promoted the export of early warning aircraft equipment in China. As the person in charge of the project, he presided over the completion of the technical research on the ground prototype of the digital array radar early warning aircraft, laying the foundation for the development of a new type of early warning aircraft. He proposed the concept of intergenerational division of early warning aircraft and the main capabilities and technical characteristics that China's next generation early warning aircraft should possess, providing an important basis for the long-term development of China's early warning aircraft.

On October 1, 2009, at the military parade for the 60th anniversary of the National Day, the early warning aircraft developed by Wang Xiaomo was used as the pilot model, leading the fleet, and flew over Tiananmen Square precisely. This is the first time that a Chinese early warning aircraft has made its public appearance in front of a global audience. Wang Xiaomo in the stands wept. This was the first time he shed tears since the development of the early warning aircraft.

On January 18, 2013, Academician Wang Xiaomo, an alumnus of BIT, won the 2012 National Highest Science and Technology Award. Academician Wang Xiaomo won the National Highest Science and Technology Award, which is the highest national award for his scientific achievements, and it is also the supreme honor of Beijing Institute of Technology.

However, in the face of this heavy honor, he said again and again that he should not flatter himself to the sky, "Let those glorious things be left to the young people."


Willing to be a ladder for others, rewarding young students

Over the years, Wang Xiaomo has profound attainments, is willing to be a ladder, attaches great importance to the cultivation of young people, and has always cared about the development of his alma mater. He has successively trained 14 doctoral students, and successively trained 18 chief designers of China's early warning aircraft system or radar system. When he was over seventy years old, he still insisted on working in the front line of scientific research, leading the scientific research team to undertake national basic and cutting-edge projects, and constantly cultivated and explored for the development of China's early warning aircraft business.

On the afternoon of April 2, 2013, Academician Wang Xiaomo returned to his alma mater after winning the 2012 National Highest Science and Technology Award. BIT held a special report meeting in the gymnasium of Zhongguancun Campus. More than 2,000 teachers and students attended. They listened to the growth trajectory, struggle and outstanding achievements of the excellent alumnus Academician Wang Xiaomo, and appreciated the personality charm of Xiaomo senior. Academician Wang Xiaomo, as a senior senior, kindly shared his study and growth in college, his hard work and struggle after joining the work, his optimism and persistence in the face of difficulties, and his courage and trust in cultivating echelons, and the gratitude and humility of his accomplishments to the teachers, students, staff and old classmates of BIT. Especially when recalling the past events of Beijing Institute of Technology, senior Xiaomo was full of emotion, raised hopes for BIT students and young teachers, and encouraged everyone to develop in an all-round way in accordance with BIT's educational goals and make contributions to the cause of military industry and national defense.

Born in the war-torn, poor and weak old China, Wang Xiaomo grew up in the new China that has changed the world. He struggled in the spring tide of reform and opening-up with vigor and vitality. He kept searching and devoted himself to the new era. He went through the great historical process of China from standing up, to getting rich, and then to becoming strong. Wang Xiaomo has been dedicated to the development and pursuit of the early warning aircraft business for decades. Academician Wang Xiaomo led the team to preside over the development of a number of radars with world advanced level, and achieved a major breakthrough in China's early warning aircraft business from scratch and to excellence. Wang Xiaomo has made a significant contribution to the cause of early warning aircraft. He has become an iconic representative of the spirit of "self-reliance, innovation, cooperation, and tenacious struggle" in early warning aircraft!


Sad as it is, a national scholar passed away; great as he is, his spirit remains immortal! We deeply cherish the memory of Academician Wang Xiaomo!
