Beijing Institute of Technology releases: China's energy economy expects to see positive trajectory in 2023!

China's energy economy continued its steady recovery in 2022, and expects to see positive trajectory in 2023.

On January 8 2023, 2023 Conference on Forecasting and Prospects Research Report of Energy Economics was held, reported by CCTV News Live Room.


The press conference was hosted by the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, BIT, Institute of National Development and Security Studies, Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Economics and Environmental Management. The conference was conducted on and offline, with nearly 3,000 people watching the online live broadcast. Eight research reports were released at the press conference, includingResearch on China's Energy Economics Index in 2022, Analysis on the Model and Impact of Inter-provincial Virtual Water Flow in China's Power Sector,andAnalysis and Trend Forecasting of International Crude Oil Prices in 2023. According to the reports, China's energy economy has recovered steadily in 2022, showing a similar cycle to the macro economy, with a small fluctuation range as a buffer however. In 2023, the macroeconomic and energy economic trends will pick up good momentum, and the new energy industry and energy integration industry will usher in greater prospects.

The series research report of forecasting and prospects of energy economics are the latest results of the national key research project "Comprehensive Assessment Model of Economic Impact of Climate Change". The project is led by the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, led by Professor Yiming Wei of Beijing Institute of Technology. The research will be carried out on specific topics based on the changes in the international and domestic energy economic and climate policy situation in the last year.

The team has been carrying out research on energy and climate economy, always adhering to the "four aspects". Since 2011, 72 research reports in total have been published for 13 consecutive years. The relevant work has been reported by many mainstream media such as CCTV, People's Daily Online, People's Daily Overseas Website, Xinhua News Agency, China National Radio and received wide attention from all walks of life.

For 13 years, we have been making continuous efforts to forecast energy economy and release research reports. For more than 20 years, we have been working hard to help build China into an energy power and carry out energy and environment research.

Now, let's take a closer look at the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research at Beijing Institute of Technology.

The Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, BIT was founded in 2009. The research center has been engaged in climate change and low-carbon development strategies for a long time. It has undertaken more than 100 national important scientific research tasks and international cooperation projects and was approved as an Innovative Research Group of the National Natural Science Foundation in 2015. In 2016, it was approved as Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Economy and Environmental Management. In 2022, it led a major project approved by the National Natural Science Foundation. The center has formed a team that has been working in the field of energy and climate economics for a long time, including 2 distinguished professors of Cheungkong Scholars, 3 recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 8 recipients of the National Youth Talent Program, 2 recipients of the China Youth Science and Technology Award, and 1 recipient of the Beijing Famous Young Teacher.

The center has established a national energy model integration platform and an energy economic data platform, including more than 10 independently developed complex system models of energy and environment, 18 databases and hundreds of millions of pieces of data in the fields of energy, environment and economy. China has independently designed and developed the China’s Climate Change Integrated Assessment Model (C3IAM), which is the only global comprehensive assessment model selected by Working Group III of the Sixth Assessment Report of the United Nations Panel on Climate Change. Relevant research results have been published in important journals of the field. Among them, more than 30 papers have been selected as "ESI highly cited papers", and 26 papers have been positively cited in 17 chapters of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. According to RePEcIDEAS, an economics magazine, in December 2022, the center ranked 6th in the world in energy economy and 11th in environmental economy.

The CCTV program Focus Interview reports the insights of Professor Wei Yiming, Vice president of the BIT and director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, on the construction of ecological civilization.

The research center has submitted more than 40 policy advisory reports to serve national decision-making. During the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the key technologies developed by the center for low-carbon monitoring and carbon neutral regulation provided important support for the realization of carbon neutral Winter Olympics and contributed to the low-carbon hosting of the Olympics.

Forging ahead with enterprise and fortitude, Beijing Institute of Technology will continue to carry out research for the major strategic needs of the country, and contribute its strength to promoting energy revolution and ensuring national energy security.
