BIT’s "Intelligent Education" in the Digital Revolution

On February 13th and 14th, the World Digital Education Conference was held in Beijing. Zhang Jun, party secretary of Beijing Institute of Technology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the main forum of the conference and shared experiences and insights on promoting "intelligent education". CCTV's "News Room" reported the event.

According to Zhang Jun, the World Digital Education Conference is an important way to implement the spirit of Party's 20th National Congress and promote the digital transformation of education. To ride with the internet pattern in digital education, it is of great importance to cultivate students' innovative thinking. First, we need to apply the most advanced and innovative technologies to the process of digital education; Second, we should change the teaching idea and improve the method; Third, we should optimize the teaching content. In terms of digital education, Beijing Institute of Technology has made fruitful exploration on how to enable digital education to cultivate talents in the trinity of shaping values, cultivating knowledge and practical ability. In terms of shaping values, virtual reality, big data, mobile Internet and other technologies will be used in ideological and political classes to realize the "activation" of ideological and political education and promote the transformation of ideological and political education from educating talents to cultivating talents. In terms of knowledge cultivation, digital education realizes the cultivation mode of "four-spectrum integration", so that students' knowledge, quality, ability and literacy can be mapped, and the basic portrait can be established for each student through multiple dynamic data acquisition technology, so as to explore students' personalized needs and achieve precise cultivation. In terms of practical ability, college students are actively encouraged to experience the changes of digital education in innovation and entrepreneurship, so that they can realize the sublimation of knowledge in the combination of theory and practice, and realize the mutual promotion of innovative character and practical ability. He said that a very important feature of digital education for universities is to build a digital education ecology. Schools should have advanced infrastructure to provide conditions and guarantees for digital transformation in various aspects, such as curriculum, MOOCs, textbooks, experiments and creative Spaces. This ecology is also an international ecology. Through the establishment of a digital education resource platform, high-quality education resources can be shared between the East and the West, and education equity can be better promoted.

The two-day World Digital Education Conference, with the theme of "Digital Transformation and the Future of Education", registered representatives of more than 130 countries and regions, diplomatic envoys and representatives of nearly 50 countries and international organizations in China, and presidents of many well-known universities attended the conference. Vice Premier Sun Chunlan attended and addressed the meeting. Mr. Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Digital Transformation and the Future of Education". The conference focused on the topics of digital transformation, development and application of digital learning resources, digital literacy improvement of teachers and students, and digital governance of education. It also released the Blue Book on China’s Smart Education, Smart Education Development Index, smart education platform standards and specifications, launched the initiative of establishing the World Digital Education Alliance and the World Digital Education Development Cooperation Initiative.

Education digitization is an important part of digital China strategy. The General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in the Party's 20 National Congress report that we should promote the digitization of education and build a learning society and a learning country with lifelong learning. At present, China is deeply implementing the strategic actions of digital education, promoting educational reform and innovation, and accelerating the building of a learning society and a learning country in which everyone can always learn everywhere.

From promoting equity to improving the quality of education, digital technology is also updating educational concepts and transforming educational models. Education digitization is an important way to realize high quality development of education. In recent years, BIT has made great efforts to promote the digitalization of education, and carried out the "intelligent education" enabling humanized training, innovatively implemented the iSPACE program with the core of "value shaping, knowledge learning and practice innovation", and constructed the intelligent "five-dimensional education" system, which has effectively promoted the all-round development of students and formed the intelligent education practice with the characteristics of BIT.

Attach importance to value shaping. BIT offers academician and master courses to enhance students' scientific literacy and humanistic quality. Through the old principal's sharing the history of the school, the party and pedagogy, students can feel the charm of smart education. We used the opportunity of serving the Beijing Winter Olympics and other major national events to invite Olympic champions into our campus, and empower smart education with science and technology. The university also attaches importance to developing students' critical thinking ability and critical literacy. In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, the university took the lead in creating a "cloud graduation ceremony" nationwide, where graduates could take photos with the principal, considering that some graduates could not return to school. This is the idea of activating value contained in value shaping. The value is concretized and visualized, so that teachers and students can enhance mutual learning and mutual understanding through the means of activation, which is easier for students to understand and assimilate.

Attach importance to knowledge learning. In order to support the "five-dimensional education" of smart technology, BIT has created a series of smart courses and textbooks. From enrollment to graduation, flexible selection and training are adopted, and finally students’ growth that encourages possibilities is achieved. The university attaches importance to the precise and personalized training of students, and guides students to learn from each other and give full play to their strengths. BIT adopts the reform of teaching supply side, improve the ability of intelligent teaching, provide resources through big data, and conduct the growth analysis of teacher-student interaction, so as to achieve accurate evaluation. The school has opened more than 7,000 courses and built an online intelligent teaching platform called "Yanhe Classroom", realizing the mutual learning and promotion of wisdom among groups. Through the blended learning mode of "Internet + blackboard + mobile terminal", students can better understand the content, and develop more interests in learning.
