To achieve excellence in medical engineering integration! BIT and PKU join hands and sign a strategic cooperation agreement

On September 23, the signing ceremony of the strategic cooperation agreement between PKU and BIT was held at Peking University. Hao Ping, Secretary of the Party Committee of PKU, Qiao Jie, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Executive Vice-President of PKU and President of the Medical Department of PKU, Zhang Pingwen, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice-President of PKU, Zhang Jun, Secretary of the Party Committee of BIT, Wang Bo and Li Zhenjian, Members of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice-Presidents of BIT, and Yan Yan, Assistant President of BIT, attended the signing ceremony.

Before the signing ceremony, both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on deepening the strategic cooperation between universities, promoting complementary advantages, and creating a model of “double first-class” university cooperation.

Hao Ping welcomed Zhang Jun and his delegation, congratulated BIT on its achievements in running a school in recent years, and briefly introduced the red history of PKU and its career development in recent years. He said: “BIT is the first university of science and engineering founded by the Communist Party of China, which has the same red gene and the same glorious tradition as PKU, and the signing of this strategic cooperation agreement will be a milestone for the development of the two universities in the new era.” He hoped that both sides can give play to their respective advantages, strengthen cooperation and in-depth exchanges in science, engineering, humanities and other multi-disciplinary directions, and promote the deep integration of new medicine and new engineering, speed up cross-disciplinary and cross-field intersection, cultivate compound innovative talents, and deeply serve national strategies such as “Healthy China”, so as to make new and greater contributions to the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Zhang Jun expressed his gratitude to PKU for its long-term support to the talent cultivation and scientific research of BIT. He said: “PKU is the first national comprehensive university in modern times in China. As the top century-old university in China, it has a deep red background and outstanding advantages in running schools, and has made remarkable achievements in running a school. He hoped that both sides would adhere to the “four orientations”, carry out multi-disciplinary exchanges, innovate cooperation mechanisms, promote cross-integration, and further cooperate in talent cultivation, scientific and technological innovation, teachering staff, etc., deepen cooperation in basic research and cutting-edge cross research, jointly promote the construction of major projects and academic communities, continue to plan for the intersection of engineering and medicine, promote the innovative application of engineering technology in the medical field, and continue to advance in the breadth and depth of science and technology to serve people’s lives and health.

This strategic cooperation will

advance the innovative application of engineering technology in the medical field.

In recent years,

BIT has continued to explore the field of medical engineering integration, and

walked out of the road of medical engineering integration with characteristics.


The Exploratory Road of BIT’s Medical Engineering Integration

As early as the beginning of the reform and opening-up, BIT began to give full play to the advantages of engineering research with foresight, and started the exploration of the medical engineering integration development. In June 1985, BIT set up the Life Sciences Research Association, which formed a representative research achievement in medical engineering integration.

In 1985, the electronic anti-inflammatory and analgesic film developed by Prof. Sun Caomin won the gold medal of the Brussels Eureka World Invention International Exhibition.

In the new century, BIT continues to improve the discipline layout, strengthen the construction of medical engineering integration disciplines, establish corresponding research institutions, gather first-class talents, and constantly accumulate research strength of medical engineering integration.

In 2002, the School of Life Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Engineering were established.

In 2017, BIT listed medical engineering integration as a “5+3” key discipline group.

In 2018, BIT cooperated with 5 well-known medical institutions including the Chinese PLA General Hospital to build a scientific and technological cooperation platform with interdisciplinary, complementary advantages, integration of wisdom, and common development, and the establishment of a medical engineering integration research institutes, which opened the road of medical engineering integration in scientific and technological innovation and complex high-level cultivation.

In 2020, BIT has set up two new medical awarding directions of modern medical technology and medical detection technology in the first-level discipline of Biomedical Engineering, so as to cultivate and build the new direction of medical disciplines of BIT.

In 2021, BIT served the strategic deployment of developing emerging medical engineering and cultivating the foundation of characteristic medical disciplines. Based on the medical engineering integration technology development and talent cultivation framework, BIT has established the School of Medical Technology, focusing on cultivating and building medical technology disciplines such as Medical Imaging Technology, Medical Detection Technology, Intelligent Medical Engineering, Materials and Regenerative Medical Engineering, Brain Medicine and Health Engineering.


At the beginning of the “14th Five-Year Plan”, the development goal of “emerging medical engineering” has gathered the important consensus of the whole school. The emerging characteristic medical science, especially in the medical engineering integration, has taken a solid step on the road of expanding medicine and ushered in a new starting point of development.

In recent years, in the face of the opportunities of the era of the big health industry and the urgent needs of people’s life and health, BIT has continued to make efforts in the field of medical engineering integration research, and a number of excellent research results have continued to emerge.


01 Application and development of new medical materials —— design and manufacturing technology

For the design and manufacturing integration methods and technologies of implants, functional devices and intelligent devices represented by orthopedics, research and develop new methods and processes such as design and manufacturing integration, 3D biological manufacturing, additive manufacturing, laser manufacturing, and develop new implants, artificial devices, and interventional medical devices for medical applications.


02 Application and development of new medical materials —— cutting-edge new materials

Multi-enhanced near-infrared second-region photodynamic therapy effect exploration applied to photodynamic antibacterial therapy

To meet the needs of clinical medicine for disease detection and treatment, bone regeneration and bone defect repair, new medical materials such as rapid disease diagnosis, drug controlled release, targeted delivery, bone defect repair, etc. are developed through the application research of composite nano materials, metal materials such as high entropy metal/functional gradient, polymer/biological composite and other functional materials.


03 Application and development of new medical materials —— molecular recognition and characteristic materials

Application development of sterilization and disinfection of MOF materials

For uremia, acute poisoning, lupus erythematosus, liver failure, renal failure and other critical diseases, to design and develop new molecular-level accurate identification blood filtration core materials, effectively filtering out harmful components, retain useful components, and reduce the risk of infection; To develop new membrane materials of ECMO (artificial lung) for patients with severe respiratory diseases; To research and develop technologies such as identification and detection of pathogenic microorganisms and molecular identification and detection of major diseases.


04 Research on brain science and technological innovation

Focusing on the major national strategic needs of “Healthy China”, civil aviation, manned spaceflight, aiming at the new direction of strategic scientific research of “brain science and brain-like research”, and starting from research fields such as brain function analysis methods, brain disease diagnosis and intervention, brain-like computing, scientific research has been carried out around bioinformation analysis methods, psychophysiological computing, mental state assessment technology, non-drug intervention technology, multiple bioinformation sensing devices, brain computer interface and brain-like chips.

For China’s huge demand for medical equipment development, import and replacement of important medical equipment, and development of medical rehabilitation devices, BIT will give full play to our advantages in mechanics, machinery, acousto-optic electronics, informatics and other engineering disciplines, focusing on precision diagnosis, minimally invasive or non-invasive treatment, digital diagnosis and treatment, and intelligent medical equipment, to research and develop advanced diagnosis and treatment technologies and methods, and new diagnosis and treatment equipment.

For the application and development of medical robots, artificial tissue and organ cultivation and other life science innovation needs, intelligent medical equipment such as surgical assistance and surgical collaboration is developed through the research and development of medical robot technologies such as bionic perception, bio electromechanical integration and brain computer integration; New technology of artificial tissue and organ cultivation and medical micro nano system is researched and developed through cutting-edge scientific research of micro nano robot cell operation and life body assembly.

High-resolution and high-precision Muller imaging polarization detection and diagnosis instrument

For the application and development needs of digital imaging, digital diagnosis and treatment, precise diagnosis, and optical medicine, BIT will give full play to scientific and technological advantages in the optical field, use the high sensitivity and specificity of optical technology and instruments in disease diagnosis and biological tissue positioning detection, research the biochemical structure information closely related to diseases and biological tissues, and develop innovative, non-invasive, highly reliable medical detection and optical medicine treatment equipment.

For the support and application requirements of China’s manned spaceflight and deep space exploration national major projects, BIT will give full play to our advantages in space medicine and space biology, focus on scientific research and technology development of microbial prevention and control and life support systems for deep space exploration manned environment, research and develop space biological cross contamination prevention system, develop core key technologies and equipment for space life support system, and promote the development and application of new diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
