Professor Cui Pingyuan of BIT was elected as the Correspondence Academician of the International Academy of Astronautics

A few days ago, the International Academy of Astronautics announced the results of the 2020 academician election. Professor Cui Pingyuan of the School of Aerospace Engineering of Beijing Institute of Technology was elected as the Correspondence Academician of the Faculty of Engineering.

International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) was founded in Stockholm, Sweden on August 16, 1960 by the world-famous scientist von Carmen. Its purpose is to encourage peaceful aerospace development, commend individuals who have made outstanding contributions in related scientific and technological fields, and promote the development of international cooperation in the field of aerospace science. The International Academy of Astronautics consists of four major disciplines: basic science, engineering science, life science and social science.

In 2020, 54 aerospace experts from 28 countries including China, the United States, Russia, Italy, Japan, France, Germany, etc. are selected as correspondents of the International Academy of Astronautics, and 59 aerospace experts are appointed as official academicians of the International Academy of Astronautics. In the election of 2020, a total of 18 experts have been selected in China, including 1 correspondence academician and 2 official academicians of the Discipline of Basic Studies; 4 correspondence academicians and 3 official academicians of the Discipline of Engineering; 2 correspondence academicians and 6 official academicians of the Discipline of Social Science.

Being elected as an academician of the International Academy of Astronautics is a commendation and recognition of the outstanding achievements in the field of aerospace science and technology. The academicians of the International Academy of Astronautics are subject to academician nomination, peer review, evaluation by "IAA Award and Academician Committee", voting by the board, and voting by all academicians. The first-time selection is generally for communications academicians, who can be converted to official academicians two years later.

Cui Pingyuan, Distinguished Professor of Beijing Institute of Technology, Member of the Academic Committee of BIT, Director of the Key Laboratory of "Deep Space Autonomous Navigation and Control" of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Director of the Laboratory of " Asteroid Detection and Defense", Chief Scientist of National 973 Program, director of National Key Research and Development Programs.

He is also a member of the 8th Aerospace Science and Technology Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member of the Aerospace Technology Expert Group, a member of the "Lunar and Deep Space Exploration International Cooperation Working Group", and a member of the Academic Committee of the National Key Laboratory of "Aerospace Intelligent Control Technology", director of the Chinese Astronautical Society, Executive Vice Chairman of the Deep Space Exploration Technology Professional Committee, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Journal of Deep Space Exploration", executive editor of "Journal of Astronautics".

He has served as a member of the Fifth and Seventh Aerospace Science and Technology Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, a member of the National Medium and Long-term Development Plan- Major Special Demonstration Group of Second and Third Phase of the Lunar Exploration Project, a member of the Detector System Demonstration Team for the Major Special Demonstration Group of the Third Phase of the Lunar Exploration Project, a member of the expert group for Special Planning of Space Science and Deep Space Exploration during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Aerospace Development, a member of major project overall expert group of "Eleventh Five-Year" 863 plan "Deep Space Exploration and Space Experiment Technology", Thematic Group Leader of the 863 Program Deep Space Exploration, Assistant Director of the Lunar Exploration Engineering Scientific Application Expert Committee, and Leader of the Lunar Exploration Technology Group.

In order to promote academic exchanges and technological development in the field of domestic deep space exploration, Professor Cui Pingyuan, as one of the main initiators and organizers, founded the internal journal "Deep Space Exploration " in 2003, and established the Committee of Deep Space Exploration Technology Chinese Society of astronautics, and founded the official journal of "Journal of Deep Space Exploration" in 2014. "Journal of Deep Space Exploration" was awarded Excellent Science and Technology Journal of Chinese Universities in2018.


In the past two decades, Professor Cui Pingyuan has been mainly engaged in research work on deep space probe trajectory design and optimization, autonomous navigation and control. The research results have been applied to major national projects such as lunar exploration, Mars exploration, and asteroid exploration, contributing to improving my China’s international position in the field of deep space exploration, expanding the "China distance" of deep space exploration, and building a space power. He has won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards; he has published more than 70 papers in the famous journals Progress in Aerospace Sciences, Automatica, Journal of Guidance Control And Dynamics, Acta Astronautica, Science China, Journal of Astronautics, Journal of Deep Space Exploration, 3 monographs, and more than 80 authorized national invention patents.
