Overseas Graduates of BIT Neglect Neither Epidemic Prevention nor Scientific Research

Beijing Institute of Technology, May 19th, 2020: The sudden novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak in the spring of 2020 changed the original scientific research and learning life. By the end of May 2020, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) still has 164 graduate students studying and living overseas. School leaders, heads of relevant departments, college leaders, and mentors are caring about the state of health of overseas students, the school take actions in imparting knowledge on epidemic prevention, establishing notification mechanisms, and sending Anti-epidemic materials, etc.The Graduate School strengthens business management and optimizes service levels, which plays a positive role in promoting overseas students' epidemic prevention and scientific research.

Established communication mechanism in time. Since January 25, the Graduate School has set up communication groups for graduate students in Italy, France, Germany, Japan and South Korea through channels like Wechat group, QQ group, telephone and questionnaire survey. The school communicates with students overseas in the group chats every day, understands their situation and resolves the emergencies in a timely manner.

On March 3rd, a questionnaire was released to all students who are sponsored by the government to study abroad, the status of these students are fully understood. BIT has achieved full coverage of overseas postgraduate contact, barrier-free communication, in-time feedback, and full monitoring of students' physical and mental health.

Provide quality management services. Through the combination of online and offline business processing modes, BIT has promptly conducted overseas Q & A, visa extension processing, change of study abroad status, return home approval, postponed return home, suspension of study, early home return, postponed dispatch, etc. At the same time, the school also actively carried out timely cooperation with the National Education Fund Committee, the education office of the embassy and consulate abroad, the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, the overseas colleges, etc. Provide timely and high-quality services for overseas students on scholarship, ticket refund and alteration, and return procedures.

Guarantee the effectiveness of scientific research. While pay attention to self-protection, students also actively carry out scientific research, adjust to the new learning plan, make good use of the online database resources provided by the school, and conduct academic discussions with tutors at home and abroad in the form of online learning, online video, remote conference, etc. Through painstaking research, some students also achieved outstanding research results during the epidemic. Based on data analysis, overseas graduate students have submitted over 70 papers to top or essential journals and have officially published more than 20 academic papers during the epidemic period.

The dark clouds cannot cover the sun, and the haze will eventually spread out.

No matter where the graduate students are, the school always cares about them. Facing the post-epidemic era, the Graduate School will continue strengthening the overall tracking of overseas graduate academic management and scientific research guidance, and make further contribution to the " Double First-Class" graduate education.

  Attached students thoughts:

Zhao Xudong: "In the early stage of the outbreak in China, I was worried about a similar situation may occur in the United States, so I changed the scientific research arrangements at once and completed the tests that must be carried out in the laboratory in advance. Then I purchased the remote operation software to start processing experimental data and writing thesis at home. Due to the accumulation of a large amount of material, my scientific research work didn't be affected. "

Li Jiehao: "I insist on two hours of literature reading every morning, focusing on new methods and new theories in the research field. In the afternoon, I communicate with the tutors and classmates, sort out the progress of the research project, summarize the problems, and discuss the problems of the reviewers. At night, I read theory books or revise papers. After finishing the doctoral training, I hope to return to China as soon as possible and continue participating in the research of the research group. "

Yang Ziming: "Using the previously accumulated data, I keep using personal laptops for data simulation and experimental processing, remotely control laboratory workstations for simulation experiments, and modify, publish papers during the epidemic."

Zhao Mingjie: "At home, I actively communicate with the teacher in charge of the thesis through e-mail and telephone to communicate the details of the thesis, and learn how to use the server remotely, which effectively ensures the successful completion of the simulation calculation results required for the thesis."

Zhang Mengzhu: "due to the epidemic situation, I readjust the research plan, and arrange as much work as possible to summarize the previous research, form research results and conduct simulations. At the same time, I carefully arrange the test plan so that the test can be completed as soon as possible at the right time. "

Zhang Chuan: "I conduct scientific research at home during the epidemic. I follow the laboratory's schedule at home to conduct scientific research seriously and alternate work with rest. I communicate with the tutor and classmates through email, Zoom, Wechat and other tools to discuss scientific research and academic issues."

Qiao Lu: "As a liberal arts major student, there is no need of using experimental equipment, home research during the epidemic is more efficient in my opinion.

At the same time, during the epidemic situation, the mentor insists on guiding our work through online meetings weekly. Visiting school's courses and seminars can also be done online, which is beneficial to achieving scientific research results. "

Ma Dashuai: "Although in self-quarantine, I still participate in the group discussion through tools such as Skype and Zoom. At the same time, I insist on reading the latest literature. Although many formal journal articles need to be charged, preprints are available. Since I don’t need to do experiments, I can do modeling and calculations works at home to ensure the scientific research process smoothly. "
