Hu Yaoguang: Be a good “all-round director” of the classroom.

This issue includes a report from Hu Yaoguang, a well-known Beijing higher-education teacher, who shares his experiences.

“Inquire about the clean canal, as there is a plentiful quantity of live water there. A good teacher should have strong moral feelings, solid knowledge, and a loving heart, as well as continuous learning, self-improvement, student-centered teaching, and instructional creativity. Teaching can only get new life and power if there is an unlimited source of living water.” In these remarks, Professor Hu Yaoguang of the School of Mechanics and Vehicles, the recipient of the 2021 Beijing Higher Education Master Teacher Award, refers to his original heart as a teacher and mission of cultivating people as a front-line teacher.

Hu Yaoguang has continued to do research and practice in education, teaching reform, and teaching innovation with full excitement, professional teaching spirit, and dedicated teaching attitude since joining the institution in 2006. In the Beijing Young Teachers’ Basic Teaching Skills Competition, he received first place and the best presentation award, as well as the first prize in the BIT’s Diwen Outstanding Teacher Award and the first prize in the First Beijing University Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition. He was awarded the Beijing Higher Education Institution’s Teaching Master Award in 2021.

In the classroom, students gain role-playing experience.

“I’ve been teaching Industrial Engineering’s “Production Planning and Control” since 2007. This is the core course in industrial engineering, and it is very practical. It focuses on production planning and control of production processes in businesses. The typical lecture-review-exam format makes it impossible for students to apply what they’ve learned to real-world business needs.” Hu Yaoguang was the first to speak.

How can we transform students’ passive participation in the learning process into active participation? What can we do to increase pupils’ overall abilities? Hu Yaoguang has been contemplating and rehearsing. He has continued to study the reform and innovation of the teaching method of research-based courses over the years, adhering to the teaching philosophy of “student-centered and ability-oriented,” combined with students’ feedback and evaluation.

“For example, in the course “Production Planning and Control,” I no longer follow the course catalog and chapter order step by step, but instead systematically sort out the course knowledge points around the course teaching objectives and expected learning outcomes, reconstruct the teaching content, and divide the teaching content into three modules: basic knowledge, experimental simulation, and research selection.” Hu Yaoguang used the MOOC and Lexue Learning platforms to conduct in-class quizzes and discussions, homework assignments, and feedback, covering all essential knowledge points of the course, including inventory control and production scheduling. “In the classroom, the teacher is more like a ‘all-round director’ who can completely mobilize the initiative and involvement of the ‘audience’ on the stage, taking a holistic picture of the whole scenario, planning, and leading the situation.”

Hu Yaoguang, on the other hand, devised a student-centered role-play experience-based experimental simulation aimed toward the complete process of production planning and control in the experimental simulation part. “In the LEGO lean production experiment designed for the 2018 class, I integrated the production concept into the role-playing session and designed business activities in various aspects from order-planning to production to inventory-inspection-shipment, while students conducted group experiments to strengthen the comprehensive understanding and mastery of the course knowledge content through the entire process role experience.” Hu Yaoguang was the one who shared.

You should be able to not only understand it, but also to learn it.

“After the first two phases of training, students’ knowledge systems are essentially created, and they have a fundamental understanding of the industrial production system, we should focus more on the research component of the selection on students’ abilities to apply knowledge, invention, and creativity.” As teachers, we should not only discover ways to get students to listen, grasp, and learn professional knowledge, but also cultivate students’ abilities to apply their knowledge to solve real problems, according to Hu Yaoguang. Learned knowledge will become obsolete, but learning will never be destroyed as long as there is a “desire” to learn.

“With the advancement of teaching, I’ve discovered that some pupils are unaware of the profession’s development trend and the discipline’s frontier.” In addition to topics like the layout and dispatching of shared bicycles on campus and the optimization of the siting layout of urban ambulances, both of which are closely related to social hotspots, Hu Yaoguang included his own National Key Research and Development Program “Research and System Development of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology for Heavy Tractors,” Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, when designing research topics. Hu frequently uses the first independently developed Red Flag car as a starting point in the teaching process to explain the course’s object, to introduce the relationship between the course objectives and manufacturing power strategy, and to integrate typical cases of ground equipment from the National Day parade in which BIT participated in research into material demand planning, production planning control, and other knowledge links, so that students understand the material demand planning, production planning control, and other knowledge links. Hu’s teaching reform and innovation did not stop there, as the course “Production Planning and Control” was granted as a high-quality undergraduate course in Beijing in 2019 and the first batch of national offline first-class courses in 2020 after years of hard work. Hu started doing research-based course teaching innovation with project-based learning in 2021, and he created an online course on China University’s MOOC platform to do so. He began a study and practice of “online and offline hybrid research-based courses” as a teaching innovation.

“Teachers instruct and educate students; teaching is the method, and developing talents is the goal. We should unify learning, doing, and being a person as university teachers, and be a helpful guide for students’ growth. We should encourage students’ innovation and creativity, cultivate their ability and spirit of lifelong learning and lifelong exploration, and guide them to face the needs of the country, live up to their youth, and take up the mission of the times, in addition to improving students’ knowledge systems.” Hu Yaoguang expressed his thoughts.
