　　State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology (BIT) was approved by National Planning Board (the current National Development and Reform Commission) in 1991 and built by BIT. In September 1996, it officially opened to the public after being checked and accepted by the state, which is an important base for scientific research, talent training and academic exchange in the field of explosion science and technology in China. The positioning of this key laboratory is to conduct applied basic research, aiming at solving major technical problems in national defense weapons and industrial safety production, obtaining more original innovations and making important contributions to national economic construction and national security. This Laboratory is built on the basis of the first-level disciplines of Mechanics, Armament Science and Technology, Safety Science and Engineering, and Material Science and Engineering, etc., and its five main research directions are: theory and application of energetic materials; explosion and damage mechanics; theory and application of damage system; theory and technology of protection; and theory and technology of explosion safety.

　　This Key Laboratory is composed of three sites: laboratories in Zhongguancun Campus, Xishan experimental area and East Garden open-air explosion test site. There are Experimental Center and Simulation Center, covering an area of 15,400 square meters, with more than 3,757 sets of experimental facilities and instruments and equipment, with a total value of 263.46 million yuan, including 206 sets of instruments and equipment with a value of more than 300,000 yuan of each and a total value of 170.2 million yuan. Laboratory instruments and equipment shall be open to the outside world and resources shall be shared. The instruments and equipment of this Key Laboratory are open to the public and the resources are shared as well.

　　There are 5 research departments of this Key Laboratory, including Energetic Materials Research Department, Impact Dynamics Research Department, Strong Carrying Effect Research Department, Protection Science Research Department, and Explosion Safety Research Department, and there are 4 academicians, 5 distinguished professors of the Yangtze River Scholars, an expert of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 5 outstanding mid-aged experts, 8 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 9 talents of Supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of the Ministry of Education. Moreover, there is an innovation team of Yangtze River scholars of the Ministry of education and 2 innovation teams of Technology and Industry for National Defense.
