Beijing Institute of Technology(BIT) was founded in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province in 1940 under the name of Yan’an Natural Academy. It is the first science and engineering university founded by the Communist Party of China. Since the founding of New China, BIT has always been among the key universities in China and the first batch of universities which have entered the national “211 Project”, “985 Project” and the “Top A World-class University”. The university is now affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

BIT began to offer post-graduate education in 1953 which was later resumed after China’s Reform and Opening up in 1978. Listed in China's first group of institutions which were admitted of doctoral and mater program authorization in 1981 and the 22 universities that established pilot graduate schools in 1984, BIT was honored to be among the first group of pilot institutions of Mater of Engineering program in 1996 and the first group of pilot institutions of Doctor of Engineering program in 2012. With 30 years’ constant efforts, post-graduate education has made great headway marked by the increasing number of academic disciplines, the growing scale of academic education and the continuous improvement of cultivation quality. Each year, BIT sends over a well good number of high-level talents for the nation.

Altogether BIT offers 23 doctoral degree programs at the first level, 95 doctoral degree authorization programs, 31 master degree programs at the first level, 158 master degree authorization programs and 12 professional degree authorization programs including MBA, EMBA, MPA and Master of Engineering(covering 25 engineering fields). BIT operates 4 first-class key disciplines at national level, 5 second-class key disciplines at national level, 3 key disciplines at national level, 10 disciplines with national defense characteristics at national level, 3 first-class key disciplines at provincial level, 4 second-class key disciplines at provincial level and 2 key inter –disciplines at provincial level. BIT has 18 post-doctoral research stations, 9 national key laboratories and centers, 49 provincial key laboratories and centers as well as one “2011 Project” collaborative innovation center.

By the end of December 2017, BIT has 2200 full-time teachers including 764 doctoral supervisors and 1793 research supervisors. It has also enrolled 17478 graduates including 3291 full-time doctoral students, 805 full-time graduate students, 529 international students and 4853 part-time graduates.Over the past 30 years, the graduate education has been fruitful, cultivating a great host of outstanding graduates of different fields for the country, enjoying high reputation worldwide. BIT has always formulated its strategies in light of national strategic needs and global developments in science and technology and education, and in accordance with its own strengths and missions. By the end of December 2017, the university had conferred 7199 doctor's degrees and 51706 master's degrees in total.

BIT has entered into student-exchange agreements with more than 100 internationally renowned universities from over 40 countries, including Technical University of Berlin, University of Miami, Tokyo Institute of Technology etc and developed academic exchanges and scientific & technological cooperation at a wide scale.

For more than a century, BIT has been at the forefront of scientific and technological breakthroughs in a wide range of high-tech fields.
