“Strengthening Moral Education and Cultivating Talents” Cultivating Top Innovative Talents Capable of Great Responsibility – Beijing Institute of Technology Holds 2019 Training Conference for Newly Appointed Supervisors

Supervisor is the first person responsible for graduate student training. In order to implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s proposal to teachers and give full play to the supervisor’s responsibility of cultivating moral talents, 2019 Training Conference for newly appointed supervisors was held in the lecture hall of the central building on September 6th. Vice president Wang Xiaofeng, leaders of the graduate school, teaching vice dean of the school, and newly appointed doctoral and master supervisors of 2019 attended the conference. It was hosted by Wang Junzheng, the executive vice dean of the graduate school.

Wang Xiaofeng made a speech at the opening ceremony of the conference. He reviewed the development of graduate education of BIT in recent years and pointed out that there were still some problems in the graduate education such as insufficient cultivation of top-notch innovative talents. Since graduate students are the basis of training top innovative talents, supervisors shoulder arduous tasks and great responsibility. They should cultivate and shape students with the spirit of BIT by words and deeds. They should become good teachers who are skilled at academic work, guiding students and treating them as their own children. They are also practitioners who adhere to academic conscience, self-discipline and norms. They need to turn their original aspiration into the spirit of taking on responsibility and overcoming difficulties, cultivate more top-notch talents and work together to help the development of “Double-First Class” initiative in BIT.

Professor Xiong Xiaolin from Beijing Normal University, with the topic of “cultivating students with morality throughout the whole process of graduate student training”, interpreted the policy of Ministry of Education of China through vivid cases and focused on the significance of “improving the political quality and paying attention to the humanistic care of graduate students”. She hoped all the supervisors can devote themselves to both academic training and political courses and cultivate successors with devotion to family and country in science and technology field.

Professor Feng Changgen, academic leader of Safety Science and Engineering, shared his experience of “how to be a good supervisor of graduate students”. As a supervisor, he summed up his 30-year teaching experience from admission to academic guidance, from supervisor’s self-psychological preparation to the approaches to encourage graduate students to overcome the frustration of scientific research. He also explained in detail the eighteen lessons he had learned about how to train graduate students. At last, he wished that all the supervisors can cultivate brilliant leading talents in science and technology field.

In view of the frequent psychological problems among graduate students, Li Xushan, director of psychological counseling center, was invited to teach supervisors how to identify graduate students with psychological problems and how to deal with them. The leaders of each department of the graduate school, from their own views, explained the policies and announcements of BIT based on the problems encountered in the work of enrollment, academic affairs and degree.

Wang Junzheng, executive vice dean of graduate school, introduced the WeChat version of Feedback of the Implementation of Cultivating Talents with Moral Education of BIT Supervisors (8 Items, 16 Articles) developed by the school. He emphasized that the graduate school should strengthen the fine classification management and assessment of supervisors. He also introduced a “top innovative talent training program”, and the development and improvement of quality supervision of curriculum for graduate students, with particular emphasis on the importance of the cultivation of scientific and technological innovation ability and international education for graduate students. At last, he reviewed the achievements in order to boost the morale of the new supervisors.

The conference involved 5 parts: conference study, professional training, seminars, group discussion and final test. In addition, the graduate school compiled a 150,000-word book, A Handbook for Supervisors , to help supervisors systematically understand the policies, systems and norms of graduate training, improve their ability to guide graduate students and promote the improvement of supervisors’ ability and training quality of BIT.
