More Talents for Emerging Disciplines

  —Record for the Research Center of Micro-nano Quantum Photons, BIT

  【Editor’s notes】On the occasion of the prevention and control of COVID-19 have achieved good results, for BIT, the year of 2020 will witness the 15th Convention of CPC Representatives, the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the Founding of BIT, the last stage of the “first step” of “the Three-step Development Strategy”, which is also a period of strategic convergence for BIT’s development. Atomic force microscope experiment is conducted under the guidance of the teachers of the Research Center of Micro-nano Quantum Photons, BIT.

  When talking about the construction the Research Center of Micro-nano Quantum Photons, BIT (hereinafter “the Center”), conclusion is drawn——“The decision to make resource adjustment has not only built a first-class scientific research platform, formed a first-class scientific research team, but also harvested first-class scientific research results, which will eventually lay a solid foundation for the construction of first-class disciplines in the future and will give “entrepreneurship” impetus. It can be described as an innovative decision of ‘one change, three achievements’”.

  At the end of 2019, the Center was put into trial operation. With “new material -new device-new system” full chain preparation research system, the Center has showed BIT’s “out of ordinary” in the construction of the cutting-edge disciplines. This decision, with BIT characteristics, is innovative of high quality, which deserves to be appreciated.

To gather parts into a whole, so as to create a first-class innovation platform

  It is an urgent need for the construction of a first-class university to build a professional, open and innovative experimental platform aiming at the forefront of international development in this field and serve the construction of cutting-edge disciplines or discipline groups. In recent years, BIT has made great efforts to optimize the school resources and comprehensively promote the adjustment of the school resources of the two Campuses. The concept of “centralized investment, unified management, open for the public and resource-sharing” has lodged itself in mind, which has laid a solid foundation for building a high-level scientific research platform for being “double first-class”.

  In 2019, with the relocation of some Research Centers from Zhongguancun Campus to Liangxiang Campus, BIT decided to give priority to the adjusted space resources to provide guarantee for the research of emerging disciplines for the experimental platform, and provide strong resource support for the cultivation and development of high-level talents.

  “For the disciplines we study, in order to maximize the benefit, space, equipment and personnel should be taken into account, the management should be unified and intensified, and collaborative innovation should be pursued”, Wang Yeliang, who is the head of the Center and the professor of the School of Information and Electronics, BIT, said. As early as October 2017, BIT took micro-nano quantum photonics research as a growth point for emerging disciplines in the future, conducted overall planning, and started the demonstration of scientific research platform construction. The research of micro-nano quantum photonics not only needs precise equipment and strict environmental requirements, but also needs the platform to have a full process of “one-stop service” from material preparation to characterization analysis to device processing and testing. Focusing on the key points, the construction idea of “to gather parts into a whole” has become a consensus.

Precision LED preparation system

  “The recourses were gathered and used together, which can avoided the problems of repeated equipment purchase, low performance, low utilization rate, scattered distribution and high maintenance cost, and we are all inspired”. The construction of the platform is an urgent task. With the strong support of BIT, Wang Yeliang, the leader, and four young talents, including Chen Qi, Zhong Haizheng, Huang Lingling, and Bian Liheng, make a clear blueprint plan for the Center after repeated demonstration.

  Through a year’s effort, the Center had been put into trial operation in 2019. Covering an area of 550 square meters, it becomes another high-level large-scale center with material preparation and characterization room, standard device preparation room, precision device preparation room, device performance evaluation room and device exhibition room, as well as the multiple full chain preparation research systems for light-emitting devices, metamaterials, photovoltaic devices, spin quantum devices, etc., and 11 sets of high-end instruments which worth more than 26.2 million yuan.

  “The construction of the Center shows the innovation and reform of BIT management mechanism and provides real and powerful support for the career development of our young teachers. The Center has guaranteed the implementation of a number of scientific research tasks, including more than 10 NSFC projects, promoted scientific research cooperation at home and abroad, and supported the implementation of complex scientific research tasks and the output of important achievements.” Prof. Wang said, with hopes for the future.

  Good tools are prerequisite to the successful execution of a job. Intensive research on a first-class scientific research platform will contribute to the original achievements with major international influence, and will accelerate the emergence of emerging research directions and disciplines.

  To gather and cultivate the talents, so as to build a first-class team with “entrepreneurship”

  “As soon as I came to BIT, I joined the team and benefited a lot. The advantage of our young people is to make continuous innovation, which is not only the need of the school, but also our pursuit. It is our unshrinkable responsibility to give “entrepreneurship” impetus to the disciplines. I think, the establishment of the Center helps to set up a scientific research and innovation incubator for young talents, so that we can better ‘grow together’”. Huang Lingling, a young teacher, has been engaged in the research of metamaterials photonics in the team of Professor Wang Yongtian, the School of Optics and Photonics, BIT, since she came in 2014. With continuous achievements in recent years, Huang is appraised and elected as Youth Yangtze Scholar, and many “impossibilities” become “possibilities”.

  “The development of first-class disciplines requires first-class talents and a first-class research teams”. How to foster a new subject direction, how to build a research team quickly, and especially how to effectively integrate the research force in the school, have always been the difficult problems for BIT to deepen reform and strive to make breakthrough.

  5 teachers of the Center have different research directions. Although from different Schools, their similar “research genes” make them on the same wavelength. Wang Yeliang, the winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, occupies himself in spin quantum structure and memory device research; Huang Lingling, Youth Yangtze Scholar, is devoted to metamaterials photonics research; Chen Qi, the winner of the Beijing Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, works on photovoltaic materials and devices; Zhong Haizheng, the winner of the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, applies himself in quantum dot application technology research; and Bian Liheng, the member of the Youth talent promotion project, conducts research on computational sensing and imaging.

  When the construction of the Center completed, the practice of conducting research on the disciplines should be done by young teachers, who have different ways of thinking. In this Center with talents, plans are made, achievements are obtained, and “innovation, sharing, cooperation and leading position” can be realized.

  “We, young scholars, are cultivated by BIT, who is like a gardener, with the support of equipment and funds. We communicate and exchange what we learnt together, so that we can make improvement as well as seeking the external aid and utilizing the internal resources, which is advantageous”, Wang Yeliang shared.

  Bian Liheng said that, “The Center is with strong research atmosphere, and hold regular seminars for academic exchanges. We are motivated, but may often feel like there is not enough time”. The teachers of the Center chose to skip the annual vacation of Spring Festival, and seized every opportunity to seek for the research results.

  Besides, many young teachers join the Center because of its remarkable results. “Three young teachers have joined my team, which will motivate us to forge ahead. In this way, there will be more and more talents”, Huang said.

  “It is a duty to cultivate the teachers who join us. The best way for them to make improvement is to make them work together and have more knowledge exchanges”, said by Chen Qi. Young teachers should quickly find their own interested cutting-edge research direction, so that the Center will be is developing all the time, and more and more talents will join the Center.

  To make integration and have the plans carried out, so as to achieve the first-class innovation results

  In April 2020, a paper entitled Broadband Perovskite Quantum Dot Spectrometer beyond Human Visual Resolution was published in Light: Science&Applications , the subjournal of Nature . By the development of in-situ preparation technology of perovskite quantum dots, the quantum dot thin films with fine spectral regulation are prepared, and a new type of hyperspectral spectrometer beyond the human eye in spectral range and spectral resolution is realized, which has comprehensively refreshed the parameters of quantum dot spectrometer published by MIT and Tsinghua University in Nature in 2015, and will have broad application prospects in the field of artificial intelligence products and scientific instruments.

  Micro-nano quantum photonics is a new interdisciplinary direction involving electronic science and technology, optical engineering, material science and engineering, physical electronics, etc.. The achievement of the field can only be obtained by thinking and conducting.

  “Actualy, as early as October 2018, Bian and I had decided to work together. He provided greater design freedom for material design on the basis the intelligent imaging algorithm, and I introduced a new material system by using new material preparation techniques. Finally, the breakthrough progress was made in April 2019”, said by Zhong Haizheng with excitement on his face when recalling the process of the research.

  In addition, the convenient micro-nano processing equipment and measurement conditions provided by the Center strongly support the “mass” preparation of 361 kinds of materials. Zhong introduced that, “Without this brilliant environment and equipment, we would not have the results so quickly”.

  At present, the Center is well-known and praised among the related Schools, and many teachers are keen on the cooperation with the Center.

  The construction of the Center is another important decision made by BIT. The innovative mode adopted gives impetus to development, and supports the construction of emerging disciplines, which is the practice results of the full chain scientific research system of “excellent team, big platform, major project and great achievement”.

  In the future, the Center will be open for the teachers and students, so as to gather more youth talents, cultivate more leading talents, achieve more high-level research result, undertake more major projects and promote the development of interdisciplinary integration, which will do great contribution to the construction of “double first-class” university.
