School of Aerospace Engineering

School of Aerospace Engineering of BIT

The School of Aerospace Engineering in Beijing Institute of Technology(BIT) was established in December 30th, 2008. Six undergraduate programs are available in this school, which are Flight Vehicle Design and Engineering, Aerospace Transportation and Control, Flight Vehicle Propulsion Engineering, Weapon System and Launching Engineering, Exploration Guidance and Control, Engineering Mechanics, alongside two first-level doctoral disciplines in Aerospace Science and Technology and Mechanics respectively. The School now consists of four departments, i.e., Flight Vehicle Engineering, Flight Control, Launching and Propulsion Engineering, and Mechanics, plus four research centers including the Deep Space Exploration, Distributed System of Space Flight Vehicle, Dynamics and Controls for Flexible Space Structures and Unmanned Flight Vehicle Automatic Control. Enjie Luan, Chief Commander of China's Lunar Exploration Program, is appointed the honorary dean of the School of Aerospace Engineering.

The 1958-built discipline of Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology ranked joint 6thin the 2017 National Discipline Evaluation, and was approved to grant master and doctor degrees in 1981 and 1993 respectively. A mobile postdoctoral center was authorized in 2007. Thesubordinate disciplineFlight Vehicle Engineering has been a National Key Discipline since 2007. The discipline of Mechanics in the School dates back to 1952, and was approved to authorize master and doctor degrees in the year of 1981 and 2003 respectively. It ranked joint 9thin the National Discipline Evaluation in 2017. Mechanics in BIT is a key discipline of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in the field of integration of information technology and industrialization, it is also a Beijing municipal strategic subject. Engineering Mechanics (subordinate discipline) has been a National Key Discipline in BIT since 1984. The School boasts a “Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control”111 Discipline Intelligence Base.

There are 150 employees in the school, with 40 professors, 75 PhD tutors. Among them one faculty member was honored asthe member of Chinese Academy of Science, one as the member of Chinese Academy of Engineering (double-hired academician), four fellows of Distinguished Young Investigator Program from National Natural Science Foundation of China, and two as chief scientists of National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Project). Furthermore, three fellows of National Natural Science Foundation of China, one Young Yangtze Scholar of Ministry of Education, two Young Overseas Talents of Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, one NationalDistinguished Educatorand five Beijing Municipal Distinguished Educators work in the School ofAerospace Engineeringof BIT. Besides, one research team at the School of Aerospace Engineering boasts the title of Innovation Group ofNSFC, one was recognized as innovative national defense team, one team was honored National Excellent Education Group and one was awarded innovative research-teaching team by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In recent years, members of the School have been taking a leading part in many scientific researches and national key projects, including two “973” projects working as a chief unit, more than 60 projects of pre-research and key models of general assembly, among them 4 projects were national key scientific research projects. The School is in charge of a major project in NSFC, four key projects and one special-funded program on national key scientific instruments and equipment development. The School won a 1stprize of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology, a 2ndprize of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology and a 2ndprice of National Award for Technological Invention. As participatory unit, the School won two 1stprize of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology, one 2ndprize of National Award for Natural Sciences, two National Award for Technological Invention and two 2ndprize of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology. Over the years, the summed research spending in the School reaches 1 billion RMB, with 792.6 million RMB from NSFC as research funds. A total of 633 papers written by the school members were included in the Scientific Citation Index and 247 patents were granted.

The School is responsible for the construction of three ministerial level key laboratories, i.e. Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control (Ministry of Education), Autonomous Navigation and Control in Deep Space (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) and Autonomous Control of UAV (Beijing Municipality). The School is also in charge of the construction of one National Virtual Simulation Lab, two Beijing Municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstrating Centers, one National Extracurricular Educational Practice Center for College Students and two National Engineering Practice Centers.

1574 students study in the school at present, 848 of them are undergraduates, 485 graduates and 241 PhD students. Students from the School of Aerospace Engineering get outstanding grades in science and technology contests in the last few years, they obtained the 1stprize in the 9th, the 11thand the 12th“Challenge Cup” Technological Innovation Competition repeatedly. They also won two 1stprize and one 2ndprice in Capital University Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition. Aside from these, they did well National Aerospace Model Championships, winning more than 10 1stprizes.

Graduates mostly devote themselves to significant fields such as aviation, spaceflight and weapon industries. The employment rate of the graduates is beyond 98%. The school has always taken the cultivation of talents as the top priority and attached importance to quality-oriented education. It has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents and industry leaders, such as Academician Huang Xianxiang, the founder of the field of launching; the winner of the National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, Xu Bo, who is also a member of the 13th CPPCC, director and chief designer of Science and Technology Committee of China Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology; the president of a “985 project” University, Zhao Yueyu; CEO of a large international company, Luo Guanhong; and Tian Gangyin, an outstanding young entrepreneur, not to mention the outstanding teams who won the International Robot Challenge Championship in Abu Dhabi in 2017 and those who won the championship in the British International College Student Aircraft Design Competition in 2018.

During the construction of “Double First-Class” university in the near future, the school will keep on implementing its strategy of “Strengthen, promote and expand ground, information and aerospace technology”. The discipline of mechanics in BIT will focus on the coupled dynamics of complex systems further. With the help of "Science and Technology to Help the Olympics", it should vigorously promote the development of sports science and technology and accelerate the overall discipline to enter the national forefront of the subject. Distinctive internationally renowned aerospace science and technology disciplines should be formed in research areas such as guidance aircraft, asteroid exploration, on-orbit construction and reconstruction of space structures and intelligent aircraft cluster technology. The School should also expand space science research fields based on deep space exploration. By the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan, the school as a whole should reach the forefront of first-class standards of similar universities in Asia.
