Computational imaging and sensing is a novel and booming research field that unifies the design of optics with algorithm development. The measurements are no longer visual images but multiplexed signals, from which high-quality images or semantic information are computationally recovered. The goal is to overcome the bottlenecks of conventional optical systems in terms of their fundamental limits such as spatial-temporal resolution, sensitivity to inaccuracies and sensing artifacts, and the computational feasibility of signal reconstruction and enhancement.
A unified perspective on computational acquisition and reconstruction gives rise to an increased number of degrees of freedom. In particular, rethinking sensing architectures can help overcome certain challenges linked to inherent limitations of physical sensing systems, albeit at the cost of increased computational complexity. Therefore, intelligent hardware and algorithm design plays a large and vital role in computational imaging and sensing.
This special issue aims to not only provide an advanced review that can attract both research beginners and seniors in related fields, but also advocate the thinking of future directions of visual system design. Prospective authors are invited to submit research papers on topics including, but not limited to:
● Novel architecture design for computational imaging and sensing
● Physics-based modeling of signal flow
● Efficient reconstruction algorithms for computational imaging and sensing
● AI enabled computational imaging techniques
● Computational microscopy
● Optical computing
● Image-free sensing
All submissions will be peer-reviewed according to the Journal of Beijing Institute of Technology guidelines. The contributions should be original and have not been published or submitted elsewhere.
